Ian Rees
Ian was born in
Birmingham of Welsh parents and his schooling was also in
Birmingham.
On leaving school he undertook an apprenticeship and qualified as a
Master Organ Builder which he pursued until the age of 23. At this
point he returned to higher education and gained his professional
qualifications at the Birmingham School of Music. After completing
his teacher training he taught for four years at Queen Elizabeth
Grammar School, Atherstone before being appointed Head of Music at
Penglais, Aberystwyth where he remained until 1998.
While at Penglais he;-
- conducted the
orchestra and windband and was successful in taking both groups
to the National Festival of Music in London, Birmingham and
Manchester.
- Became involved with
the Aberystwyth/Kronberg Twinning, taking young musicians to
Kronberg on numerous occasions and was involved with the first
concert to celebrate the official twinning of out two towns.
- He was a panel member
for music at GCSE and “A” level for Welsh Joint Education
Committee.
- Teacher governor at
Penglais
Since retiring;-
- He has been an “A”
level examiner for Edexel
- Is piano tutor for
Aberystwyth University.
- Works part-time for
the Education Authority dealing with young people with
behavioural problems.
He has been married
to Helen for thirty-two years and they have a daughter, Sarah, a
litigation lawyer.
His hobbies include photography, caravanning, playing the organ and
the care and use of a Triumph Stag sports car.
