The role of the Youth Activities committee is to identify and develop projects and activities, which satisfy the needs and develop the aspirations of local young people


Committee meeting 17th January 2012
Matters Arising -Young Chef :Rtn Allen Carr reported that despite every effort there were no entries for the competition. The point was made that the schools no longer teach cookery in the traditional sense, thus it is very difficult to attract students to take part unless having an interest in cooking outside school. Rtn Allen Carr was thanked for his efforts in trying to attract competitors.
Mock Interviews - Alun John reported that Mock Interviews would take placeat the College of Further Education on January 18th. Jo Pearce had arranged that 8 students would be interviewed.Rtns Alun John, Eifion Lewis, Meurig Lewis and Geraint Thomas will conduct the interviews. Penweddig will have their interviews at a later date.
Young Musician - The Wales final of the Young Musician will take place on Saturday, January 21st. It was agreed to ask the treasurer for a donation of £50 towards Grady Hassan’s travelling and accompanist expenses.
IT competition - Details of an IT competition for Primary and Yrs 7,8,9, Secondary Schools were distributed. The competition involves creating  an A4 leaflet to publicise a place of interest for tourist to visit in localities around the Aberystwyth area. The committee were in full support of the venture.
RYLA - Rtn Eifion Lewis will be negotiating with Penweddig school to see if a suitable candidate for RYLA can be foundThere  followed an informal discussion of ways to generate some money for the use of the New Generation’s committee. Discussions to be resumed at a later date.
Committee meeting 15th November 2011
Photographic Competition - this has been successfully completed with over 90 photographs being judged.  The standard was very pleasing and the winning entries as well as the highly commended photographs were exhibited at the Arad Goch Centre. The primary school winner was from Talybont school and the Secondary School winner was from Penglais.
Youth Speaks (Welsh) -  Having  contacted Talybont, Llanddeiniol and Llangwyryfon Young Farmers Clubs offering them the opportunity to enter a team in the competition, it was disappointing not to receive a positive response. It has to be noted however, that Ceredigion Clubs were celeberating their 70 th anniversary during October and there were many county based activities taking place.
Young Musician( local) competition - this was held at Penglais School on October 19 th at 5.00p.m. The competition was again be sponsored by Cerdd Ystwyth and T.J. Davies and Son. Although having only 2 competitors, Sophie Rudge (Singer) and Grady Hassan(instrumental), both from Penglais school were worthy winners.
Young Musician (area) competition - this was held at Penglais School on November 14 th . There were 4 entrants, as well as the 2 from Aberystwyth, there were 2 entrants from Llandeilo, John Turner-Smith (Singer) and Abigail Hammett(instrumental). The winners were Grady Hassan and John Turner-Smith.
Young Chef competition - It was agreed to offer Penglais, Penweddig, Tregaron Schools as well as Aberystwyth College of Further Ed an opportunity to enter candidates for the Young Chef competition. Rtn Allen Carr has made the necessary arrangements and contacted the Heads of Department. We await to see how many have competed early in December.
Mock interviews - Alun John has had preliminary discussions with both Secondary Schools and the College of Further Ed. regarding  Mock Interviews . Details will be forwarded to club members in the future and hopefully many members will be prepared to offer their expertise

Committee meeting September 20 2011
Matters Arising - A second letter regarding the Photographic Competition has been distributed to all schools in the area. Hopefully the response from the schools will be positive with a large entry by October 14 Three Young Farmers clubs in the area have been invited to enter teams for this year’s Youth Speaks (Welsh) competition. Talybont, Llanddeiniol and Llangwyryfon Clubs have been approached and we await a response from the clubs.
Young Musician competition- Rtn Alan Wynne Jones and Rtn Ian Rees reported that schools had received the information about the Young Musician competition . Details about the young instrumentalist and young singer have been circulated. Eirwen Hughes and Louise Amery have agreed to adjudicate the competition to be held at Penglais School on October 19 th at 5.00p.m. The competition will again be sponsored by Cerdd Ystwyth and T.J. Davies and Son. We await a reply from David Russell-Hume to be able to confirm the date of the Area Young Musician which will be held mid-November.

Golf - Rtn Alun John reported that a very successful Golf Tournament between Penweddig and Penglais Schools was held at Aberystwyth Golf club on Friday, Sept 16th.  30 youngsters participated in a very keen contested spirit. Penweddig were the eventual winners. A trophy and prizes were donated by Joseph Evans Marine Hotel. Another similar tournament is scheduled to be held at Borth and Ynyslas Golf club at the end of October. A girl’s competition will be held on the same day. The chairman thanked Alun John for organising the event.
Photographic competition - Prize money for last year’s Photographic competition has been received thankfully from Malcolm Slater.

Committee meeting July 19 2011Photographic competion - Letters regarding the Photographic Competition  had been distributed to all schools in the area and the initial response from the headteachers and staff was very positive.
RYLA - The two RYLA students have been in touch with Alun John and arrangements have been made to collect Aifa from Doly gaer on Friday evening July 29
Young Chef competition - Rtn Allen Carr has letters ready to distribute to pupils at Penweddig in September informing them of the Young Chef competition

Committee meeting June 14 2011Photographic Competition -   A letter from Deian Creunant was read out to members outlining his plans for aFfoto Aber competition. Rotary would still be in full control of the  schools’ competition but there would be opportunity for the winning entries to be part of the Ffoto Aber exhibition to be held at the National Library. Members agreed to proceed with the plan and proposed that the chairman and Alun John be part of further discussions with Deian Creunant regarding the schools’ competition.
Young Musician - There will be a Young Instrumentalist and Young Singer competition this year. Alan Wynne Jones and Ian Rees agreed to take charge of the arrangements. RYLA Suitable candidates will be sought during the year with Eifion Lewis agreeing to organise the interviewing process.
Youth Speaks (Welsh) - Although having failed in previous years to attract any schools to take part, the chairman offered to try and target one of the local Young Farmers Clubs to enter a team. The Rotary format is the same as the Young Farmers thus it may be possible that one of the local clubs can be persuaded to participate.Hopefully we can attract a contestant for this competition this year and Allen Carr has agreed to make the necessary arrangements.
Kids Out - A very successful and rewarding day was enjoyed by a group of about 50 this year and again we will organise Kids Out next June.
Mock Interviews and Young Interviewer - It is the committee intention to arrange these activities again later on in the year.Schools Competition:Having organised a young writers competition for the past few years it is the committee’s intention to try something new this year by arranging  a competition asking  pupils to create an A4 advertising leaflet to publicise any place or something of interest in their locality to attract visitors. It can be produced on computer and contain photos and graphics. More detailed information will follow.

AGM 2009/10 report - 27th April 2010 (Chaiman Alun John)It has been another busy year for this group of “young” Rotarians. My thanks are due to all the Rotarians for their participation.Young Chef - The highlight of the year was Jon Griffiths of Penglais School going through to the third round of the Young Chef Competition in Birmingham. Jon did really well and Gwesty Cymru are predicting a promising future for him. Our thanks go to Gwesty Cymru for their fantastic support throughout.Mock Interviews - We managed to arrange these with the Careers Department at Coleg Ceredigion and their thorough preparation greatly assisted our members who went on the panels during the day. No real enthusiasm from Penglais or Penweddig at the moment.Young Singer Competition - The Competition was held in the Marine Hotel and a very entertaining evening was had by all. We had a number of fine competitors and the winner was Tommy Turner from Ysgol Penweddig. The adjudicator was Mrs Delyth Hopkin Evans. Thanks to Cerdd Ystwyth for their sponsorship support.Young Musician Competition - The competition was held in Penweddig School. Another very enretaining time with Heledd Griffiths from Ysgol Penweddig a worthy winner. The District Final is at the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea on Saturday, 8 May. I am sure that we all wish Heledd well in the next round of the Competition. Our thanks go to Cerdd Ystwyth and T J Davies (Jewellers) for their sponsorship of the Competition and to Dr David Russell Hulme as adjudicator.Young photographer Competition - The competition was sponsored by Malcolm Slater and Rees Astley the insurance brokers. The competition was well supported this year with a high standard of entries, especially in the Junior section, according to the Judges who were Malcolm Slater and Mike Price. Preparations are well in hand at the moment. Looks like a full bus again this year.RYLA - A candidate from Penweddig has been selected and is to be interviewed this Thursday, 29 April.Before concluding my report, I should like to thank the Club for making up the difference in sponsorship for some prizes and all the members of the Committee for their input. I wish next year’s Chair every success and assure him of the Committee’s continued support.
