The role of
Foundation service committee is to raise awareness in the club
of Rotary Foundation, identify and support international projects,
provide counselling and support for visiting Rotary scholars and
identify suitable applicants for Rotary scholarships and Group
Study Exchange schemes.
The Mission
of the Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International
in fulfilment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary’s mission
and the achievement of World understanding and peace through local,
national and international humanitarian, educational and cultural
support programs. The Foundation has become one of the foremost
non-governmental foundations in the world. It is said that every
minute of every day Rotary will touch the lives of millions somewhere
in the world. The Rotary Foundation is one of the world’s
leading charitable foundations and each Rotarian can be justly
proud of its achievements in the past, present and in the future.

Polio Eradication - Money
from the Wishing Well continues to boost our total contribution
to the Polio Eradicatioin Campaign which stands at £2975.
When it reaches £3000 it will be forwarded as our commitment
for two years towards the Gates Challenge.
Ambassadorial Scholar - Wendy has undertaken
3 speaking engagements, Rotary Club of Molford Haven, Inner Wheel
Club of Aberystwyth and our own club.
We continue to add to the list of speaking engagements which at
present is:

Scholarship scheme - Rotarian Godfrey submitted
the usual letter to the Cambrian News inviting applications for
our scholarships. There was a 3 week delay in publication, while
this is disappointing it is not a disaster since the closing date
is the end of March

Ambassadorial
Scholar - Twelve clubs, mainly from Zone 1, have been
E-mailed to offer Wendy to speak at their meetings.
So far 3 speaking engagements have resulted from these contacts
and Wendy's program is:-

Fishguard & Goodwick 20 May
Knighton have asked if Wendy can speak at their club and arrangements
are being made.
Humanitarian Grants - This year's advertisement
will be placed in the Cambrian News in January.
Grant - We have responded to a request for financial
help from a 20 year old who is taking part in a VSO Global Exchange
project with Bangladesh starting in January. We have given £200.

Ambassadorial Scholarships - Our 2008-09 scholar
will returm for a month in the autumn and we will attempt to
arrange speaking engagements. We will receive a 2009-10 scholar
to study Library and Inforrnation Studies. Wendy
Swain graduated last year from the University of New England,
Armidale and she has already been in contact with Rotarian Sonia,
her host counsellor. We will explore the possibility of nominating
an outgoing scholar.
Group Study Exchange - We will be hostinga team
of 5 from S. Australiao on the 2l/22 September. Host Rotarians
have been organised and cultural and vocational programmes are
being planned.
Matching Grants and DDF - We will co-operate
with other committees that wish to appty to these for funding
a project.
Our own humanitarian grents - As in previous
years, an advertisement will be placed in January.We will bid
to Club Council for £1000 and the £400 carried forward
from 2008-09.
Polio Eradication - This programme has been assimilated
into the "Thanks for life" project, an RIBI project
with a number of linked initiatives. Those that our committee
il look into pursuing are links with the local schools, to raise
awareness of polio and as potential fund raising. The contact
with schools will be through the Youth Activities committee. A
window of opportunity to showcase the Polio Eradication Campaign
combined with a Cambrian News article will be arranged to coincide
with Rotary Day 23 February 2010..
Fundraising - Our own fundraising will involve
continued use of the Wishing Well monies and Rotary's share of
the Pig Roast for the Gates Challenge. We will collaborate with
the International Committees of Rotary and Inner Wheel in running
the Pig Roast.
As the result of a brief surveyo f membersw, e will not be orderingC
alendarsth is year. Our
asitude to Christnas Cards is less clear, but we will keep members
informed.

Cards
and Calendars - Christmas cards and calendars were purchased
and sold to members with profits going to the Foundation Fund.
Ambassadorial scholar
-
The Kazakstani Scholar, Milana Karanayidi ,arrived in April to
do a course in International Law. The duration of her stay is
uncertain.
Scholarship scheme - Applications
were received from eight young persons for grants towards the
costs of overseas projects.Three applicants were approved for
grants
One has gone to Kenya for three months with the Leap organisation
undertaking a variety of humanitarian work.
The second will be climbing Mount Kiliminjaro with a University
team on behalf of Childreach,to provide facilities for schoolchildren
in Tanzania. The third applicant had to withdraw.
Foundation - Rotary Foundation’s proposed
changes to its funding structures (to take effect in 2103) were
considered by the Club. Members voted in favour of our District
taking part in the three-year pilot scheme.

of the Foundation Committee for 2007/2008
Ambassadorial Scholars It was disappointing yet
again this year that no Ambassadorial Scholars came to Aberystwyth.
Christmas cards All Christmas Cards and Calendars
were sold with £1.15 of the cost of each Calendar sold,
going to Rotary Foundation.
Coffee We also sold 48 packs of coffee and a
further 90p per pack went to Rotary Foundation.
Scholarship Scheme We were given a budget of
£1,000 again this year for the Club’s Scholarship
Scheme. Four applications were received of which one did not meet
our criteria. We were pleased that the other three were all from
young people who are going abroad to carry out humanitarian work
which are exactly the type of projects that we are anxious to
support.
The committee donated the following sums:-£300
to Angharad Preston. She will participate in Global
Exchange. She will spend 3 months in Stansted and 3 months
in Indonesia staying with host families and will work towards
bringing benefits to local communities in both countries.
£300 to Jonathan Evershed. He will spend 2 months in Nepal
working for Info Nepal.
During his stay he will be working in one or more of the orphanages
managed by the organisation.
£300 to Francesca Sanders. She will be travelling to Swaziland
for a 2 month’s stay. She will be working as a volunteer
for the Telenti project. Francesca will assist in schools, children’s
homes and non-formal placements.
